Irish dance and music has its roots based firmly in tales and tradition and is expressed through the medium of family and community gatherings; in this way it has been passed down from generation to generation.

Choreographed by Artistic Director Keira Martin, Threads is a synthesis of different rhythms and movement that taps into this vein and seeks to express the self same spirit of story and sentiment evoking the Celtic past of struggle, joy, love, travel and loss while at the same time fusing with contemporary influences to give a lively and absorbing experience which will both haunt and enchant the audience combining soulful laments and toe tapping beats.

"just wanted to say one more time how much I enjoyed your piece last night. It's a real joy to watch, somehow has the sophistication of contemporary choreography, combined with the simplicity and authenticity of folklore. And it was amazing." Audience member 2011

"I was thrilled by this haunting and beautiful dance that evoked a range of deep emotions through the expert choreography of Keira Martin and supported by a fine ensemble of musicians and dancers, led by Keira herself. Enigmatic and subtle black and white images create the backdrop for this interlinked sequence of dances inspired by Irish folk dance. The sweet notes of the flute and fine singing of Betty Martin weave the narrative of love and longing through the dance.

Keira in Flame red, her wild hair creating a halo for her expressive performance, leads the audience into the first tentative steps, like a graceful bird. Each step is a rediscovery of the first dance, the discovery of the power of the leg to move, change direction, make contact with the resistance of the ground. A primordial act. The contrast is at once shocking and exciting; the sound of dancing ‘clogs’ rattling out their rapid and mesmerising beat; Keira’s arms moving up and down so fast  in sweeping arcs like time-lapse photography- a true bird with wings-a spectacle of power and joy.

The mood changes in the next dance.  A duet  in which boy meets girl. Echoes of Irish dance moves are used in an entirely modern context. Bodies meet in shy formality, then roll and twist against each other as they discover the sensual delight of romantic touch. More dancers emerge in the next piece-a four part machine, each with backs facing the audience. First shoulders, then back muscles, then arms, shrug, rock and twist in machine-like tones. A spare dramatic spotlight slants across the stage: smoke rises to fill the cold light."
